With limited foot traffic and a detached building, the shop's signage would get lost in the surrounding visual clutter. The client recognized the importance of maximizing signage visibility to compete with centrally located stores and attract customers.

What We did
To maximize signage visibility and drive foot traffic for the retail shop, we developed a comprehensive strategy that addresses the unique challenges of the location.
Fairness in Competition: We argued that granting permission for a slightly longer sign would help the shop achieve a more balanced level of visibility, ensuring fair competition within the shopping mall. This approach aligns with the core principles outlined in the city's sign ordinance, which emphasizes promoting fairness in competition within the business community.
Proportionality and Aesthetics: We demonstrated that a larger sign would create a more balanced and aesthetically pleasing look for the building, contributing positively to the overall streetscape.
Optimizing Signage Allocation: We proposed allocating the limited signage allowance for the secondary facade facing the parking lot towards a longer sign on the primary facade facing the street. This approach adheres to the total signage allowance outlined in the ordinance and prioritizes visibility for customers arriving by car.
Code Compliance: We ensured that our signage design complied with the city's Municipal Code, which specifies a maximum sign area of 50 square feet for buildings within 100 feet of a public right-of-way.
Consistency with the Area: We highlighted that a 50 square feet sign for the shop would maintain consistency within the streetscape and not disrupt the overall aesthetic, as several neighboring businesses in the area have signage exceeding 50 square feet.
By considering these key factors, we developed a signage strategy that effectively addresses the unique challenges of the location and maximizes visibility for the retail shop.
